Exciting news that we are now in the planning stages of a new 17-unit complex!

The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society (AAHS) aims to break the cycle of poverty vulnerable people find themselves in, and to improve the quality of their lives by providing community-supported, high quality affordable and energy-efficient housing, along with provision of supports to tenants to navigate services and facilitate community building among tenants.

Our first initiative, Riverside Estates, was built in two phases, opening in March 2017 and October 2018. Our second housing complex, Appleseed Court, opened in January 2022. A 2-unit home was donated to AAHS in 2023, resulting in 28 occupied units today. Each apartment complex includes a community room and gardens. In development are 17 additional homes.

Tenants are drawn from Antigonish town and county. Tenants include individuals, single- and dual-parent families, African Nova Scotians, individuals with disabilities, immigrants, Indigenous People and have ranged in age from infancy to 90-plus years of age. Tenants report gaining new opportunities and numerous advantages by living in AAHS housing, e.g. freeing their finances to improve quality of living, stability, community, sense of well-being, and enhancing wellbeing by providing security, better air quality, and safe access to the outdoors.

The Society actively explores new ways to address the ongoing need for affordable housing locally and contributes to development of community housing in N.S., especially in rural areas of the province.
