AAHS HOMES

"Oh, it’s perfect here. It was terrible where I was before. We really couldn't be happier. It’s just 100%."

AAHS’s custom-built apartment complexes each include 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units, approximately ¼ of which are barrier-free. This ensures AAHS can house a range of household sizes and needs. Each development includes a community room that serves as a tenant and organizational meeting space. Use of onsite community garden boxes is encouraged.

Buildings are built to high environmental standards. Each community makes use of solar panels to help us achieve a net zero carbon footprint and manage costs. AAHS is pleased to be a partner in the Town of Antigonish’s forthcoming solar park.

As part of envisioning a future community at Sugarloaf, AAHS hosted a by-invitation community consultation. More than 50 residents and partners helped consider additional means to further our social, environmental and financial sustainability commitments.

Under Construction: APPLESEED COURT
Phase 2

Construction began on a further 17 apartments adjacent to Appleseed Court in the fall of 2024.

The land was provided by the Province of Nova Scotia as a result of AAHS’s competitive application.

Apartments will be ready for move in in August or September 2025. See information about applying.

Potential Land
SUGARLOAF

In October 2024, AAHS announced that it hopes to receive a donation of land on Rte 337 near St. Martha’s Hospital, Parkland and the Mount Cameron neighborhood. In anticipation of being given this land, AAHS is in conversation with local supporters and the Provincial and Federal governments to design and fund the first phase of construction. Our hope is to open approximately 50 new homes by late 2027, and another 50 over several years.

Information for Potential Tenants

“It changed me. Friendly people and nice neighbors plus meeting different people I never met before…coming home to a new place every day seeing different people; also having gatherings in the community room such as talking about gardening; also having a place that's quiet and enjoying the outdoors; also having a community room to use for socializing and going to parties.”

ELIGIBILITY

  • To be eligible individuals and families must show that their income is below amounts set by the Provincial Government. In January 2025, the allowed total income was $62,500 for a 1-bedroom; $73,000 for a 2-bedroom; and $84,500 for a 3-bedroom apartment.
  • AAHS announces the allowed incomes when promoting apartment vacancies.
  • You must have been a resident of Antigonish Town or County for at least the past three years to apply.
  • You must not have a violent criminal record or be on the sex offender registry. All adult household members will have to pass a criminal record check before being selected for tenancy.

HOW TO APPLY WHEN OPENINGS OCCUR

As soon as vacancies in our units become available, we inform the public in multiple ways. We post a vacancy announcement on our website and promote through social media (via AAHS, Ask Antigonish, What’s Going On In Antigonish, local organizations’ posts) and announce on local radio.

When we have openings, you can complete an online application or download an application from our website. Paper applications will be available from AAHS, at the library, town and county offices, the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and A Roof Over Your Head.

We are not able to maintain a waiting list for our units. By announcing vacancies publicly, we hope to give everyone an equal chance at securing one of our units.

“Closer to work; closer to Superstore; easier to get places. Living in Appleseed Court lowered financial stress. I'm so much happier here. … not worried about paying bills and groceries.”

Being a Tenant

INFO ABOUT LIVING IN AAHS HOMES

AAHS strives to create places that people will call home and small neighborhoods that provide community. Having stable, quality, affordable housing improves well-being and increases opportunities.

Our tenants tell us what they appreciate: “being happy and coming home to a new place every day seeing different people.”  “This is the most comfortable I have been with my neighbors in all the places I have lived.”

TENANT GUIDELINES

Those living in AAHS housing are required to follow the house rules and regulations set out in the Tenant’s Guide provided during the application process.

Tenants are encouraged to be familiar with the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act which explains the rights and obligations of residents and landlords in all rental buildings in the province. The Act is available on the legislative website at Residential Tenancies Act.

You can also find information about any recent changes by going to the Access Nova Scotia website Residential Tenancies Program – Government of Nova Scotia.
